The city of Novi is located in Oakland County, Michigan, about 25 miles northwest of downtown Detroit. According to the United States census in 2010, Novi was the happy home to 55,224 people.

Novi welcomed more than 7,500 people to its civic family during the decade between the 2000 census (which listed 47,386 population) and 2010 census, which represents a 16.5 percent population growth.

The section of Oakland County upon which Novi is situated today did not gain recognition as an officially incorporated city until 1969, after making unsuccessful attempts to do so since about 1959.

Novi garnered respect for its overall quality of life in 2008, ranking No. 48 on Money magazine's list of the Top 100 Best Places to Live.

Outstanding educational opportunities and schools, dazzling, wide-open green spaces and cultural diversity, as well as Novi’s more than 200 miles of sidewalks and smooth pathways were mentioned in Money as other reasons for the city’s top-50 ranking.

What's in a Name

There seems to be a bit of controversy regarding the true origin of the city’s name, Novi. Apparently, what is not in dispute is that it received the moniker in 1832, about the same time period that the community started to come together and organize into Farmington Township.

This mostly tongue-in-cheek debate has taken on a life of its own throughout the years, as these kinds of things tend to do in smaller rural or suburban communities. The City of Novi’s official website gives us a number of the common theories, including these two:

When Novi first reached township status, it became the sixth section of southwest Oakland County to attain this title. It was then given the designation “NoVI” for number six. These two symbols, when put together side by side, form what at least sounds like it could be an actual word, “Novi.”

For some reason, a relatively equal number of individuals believe that the city’s name was derived from Toll Gate No. VI, which spans the Grand River. The toll road, on which the gate stands, however, didn’t exist until 22 years after Novi received its name.

Fun in and around Novi

While it is a comparatively small city, Novi offers an incredible amount of indoor and outdoor recreation and relaxation options for its residents.

More than 1,000 acres of parkland is spread out around the town. The City of Novi’s Novi Parks and Recreation also provides 1,300 athletic and recreation programs for all ages. Two lakes call Novi home: Walled Lake and Shawood Lake.

Novi by the Numbers

The 2010 census also showed a relatively racially diverse community:

• 8.12 percent African American
• 2.96 percent Hispanic or Latino
• 2.07% from two or more races
• 0.73 percent from other races
• 0.20 percent American Indian
• 0.01 percent Pacific Islander

Novi is not only about 30 minutes from the urban hub of Detroit, but it is also close to Ann Arbor, Mich. (about 30 minutes), the Detroit Metropolitan Airport (about 20 minutes) and quite a few major thoroughfares, including Interstate highways 96, 696 and 275.

The community’s main private sector employers, according to the City of Novi’s 2010 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, include the Novi Community School District, Intier Automotive and Ryder Systems Inc.

Taken altogether, Novi offers a charming place to live, great amenities, and a great location near larger urban areas. It’s easy to see why Novi has grown!
